1.Definition and Function

The flow box holds a crucial position in the papermaking industry and is one of the core components of the paper machine. Its main responsibility is to distribute the prepared pulp to the wire section of the paper machine in a uniform, stable, and controllable manner. By precisely controlling the flow rate, flow volume, and fiber distribution of the pulp, the flow box lays the foundation for the subsequent formation of a uniform and consistent wet paper web, which plays a decisive role in the quality and performance of the final paper.

 

2.Basic Components

Box Body: As the main structure of the flow box, it is typically made of high-strength metal materials such as stainless steel or high-quality alloy steel. It not only needs to provide sufficient space to accommodate the pulp but also must be able to withstand the pressure generated by the internal pulp and the mechanical stress from the external complex environment. The design and manufacturing quality of the box body directly affect the overall stability and durability of the flow box.

 

Pulp Distributor: This is a key component to ensure the uniform distribution of pulp in the cross-machine direction. Through a series of carefully designed channels and distribution devices, it evenly distributes the incoming pulp across the entire cross-machine width. The performance of the pulp distributor directly determines the consistency of the pulp in the cross-machine direction, thereby influencing the basis weight and thickness uniformity of the paper in the cross-machine direction.

 

Rectification Elements: Include homogenizing rolls, turbulence generators, etc. The homogenizing rolls stir and homogenize the pulp through rotation, eliminating possible local concentration differences and fiber agglomeration. The turbulence generators generate appropriate turbulence to promote the dispersion and mixing of fibers while avoiding excessive turbulence that causes fiber flocculation or damage to the fiber structure. These rectification elements work together to bring the pulp to an ideal flow state before entering the wire section, thus ensuring the quality and performance of the paper.

 

Lip Plate: Located at the outlet of the flow box, the shape and opening of the lip plate directly control the speed and angle at which the pulp is ejected onto the wire section. By precisely adjusting the opening and shape of the lip plate, precise control over the landing point and ejection speed of the pulp on the wire section can be achieved, thereby influencing the formation and quality characteristics of the paper.

 

3.Working Principle

The pulp is first introduced into the box body of the flow box. After uniform distribution by the pulp distributor, under the action of the rectification elements, turbulence and non-uniformity are eliminated, and the pulp reaches a stable and uniform flow state. Finally, through precise control of the lip plate, it is ejected onto the wire section of the paper machine at a specific speed and angle, and a wet paper web is formed under the filtration and dewatering action of the wire section.

 

4.Performance Parameters

Flow Rate Control Accuracy: Determines the basis weight consistency and fiber distribution uniformity in the cross-machine direction of the paper.

 

Flow Volume Stability: Ensures the stability of the paper quality during the production process and reduces paper defects caused by flow volume fluctuations.

 

Fiber Dispersion Effect: Good fiber dispersion can improve the strength and uniformity of the paper.

 

5.Maintenance and Care

Regular Cleaning: Remove sediment, impurities, and fiber residues inside the box body to prevent clogging and affecting the flow of the pulp.

 

Component Inspection: Regularly inspect key components such as the pulp distributor, rectification elements, and lip plate to ensure there is no wear, deformation, or damage.

 

Calibration and Adjustment: Regularly calibrate and adjust parameters such as flow rate, flow volume, and lip plate opening to ensure the performance of the flow box is always in the best state.

 

6.Selection and Application

When choosing a flow box, comprehensive considerations should be made based on factors such as the type of paper machine, the variety and specifications of the produced paper, the production speed, and the quality requirements. Different types of flow boxes (such as open type, air cushion type, hydraulic type, etc.) have different performance characteristics and application scopes. For example, for high-speed, high-quality paper production, a flow box with more advanced control technology and higher precision may be selected; while for the production of some ordinary papers, a more economical and practical model may be chosen.
