The Press Roll
Press rolls are cylindrical components located in the press section of a paper machine, positioned after the forming section and before the drying section. Their primary function is to mechanically remove water from the wet paper web by applying pressure in the nip (contact) zone between two rolls or between a roll and a shoe press.
Efficient water removal at this stage is critical because it reduces the load on the drying section, which consumes significant energy through steam heating. Thus, effective press rolls contribute to improved energy efficiency and faster paper production speeds.
Press rolls also influence the sheet’s surface smoothness, thickness uniformity, and overall mechanical properties. They play a direct role in preventing sheet defects such as wrinkles, breaks, or unevenness, which can lead to production downtime and material waste.

Types of Press Rolls and Their Functions
Rubber press rolls are one of the most widely used types of press rolls in modern paper mills. They feature a rubber covering bonded to a steel core, designed to provide elasticity and uniform pressure distribution across the paper web.
The elasticity of the rubber surface allows the roll to conform to the shape of the mating roll or shoe, enhancing the nip pressure and improving water removal without damaging the delicate paper fibers or press felts. Rubber • press rolls are particularly effective in:

By combining vacuum suction with mechanical pressing, vacuum press rolls enhance dewatering performance beyond what mechanical pressure alone can achieve. This results in:

Applications
